26 Doctors is a solo show written and performed by Sugith Varughese, which chronicles his life as a pioneering South Asian in Canadian show biz – with the world’s worst show business name.
Coming from a family of doctors going back two generations, Sugith is expected to follow in the family tradition – and even becomes the first pre-med/drama double major at the University of Saskatchewan. But he betrays his family’s expectations and pursues a career in the arts, long before diversity may have made a career path even possible.
Playing multiple characters both on and off-stage and enhanced with video projections, 26 Doctors explores themes of cultural expectations, type casting, and growing up as the only brown kid in school. At its core is Sugith’s relationship with his father, a neurosurgeon, who Sugith unconsciously channels when he plays a surgeon at the climax of his television career.
