Surrendered Spirits is an inter-multidisciplinary duet that excavates the introspective reflection on memories of childhood fractures and joys. Inspired by the impact of familial displacement, and the artists’ upbringing as children of racialized, marginalized and immigrant families, the work rides the edge through physical and emotional virtuosity, guiding you through collective breath, care and emotional blooms while addressing the ancestral wounds seeking to be nurtured.

Surrendered Spirits invites you into a vortex of physical and emotional vibrancy, and a paradigm that weaves our narratives through dance, theatre, song, and ritual.

Surrendered Spirits is presented on a double-bill performance with Rudy Ray & Co.*

*This double bill will also feature a special performance by Kenyan contemporary dancer and choreographer, Maulid Owino. He will present a short solo work entitled Sudden Moments, as well as a structured improvisational duet with Nickeshia Garrick.

Irma Villafuerte: Co-Choreographer, Performer
Nickeshia Garrick: Co-Choreographer, Performer
Brandon Valdivia: Music Composition

Surrendered Spirits was originally co-commissioned by curatorial and producing partners dance Immersion and Kaeja d’Dance.

Surrendered Spirits is presented as part of Jamii’s Joy in the Park presentation. It is presented in partnership with Canadian Stage, and funded in part by the Canada Council for the Arts, the City of Toronto’s Main Street Innovation Fund, the Government of Canada through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario, Rama Gaming House, and Charitable Gaming.
