As part of our commitment to constantly re-imagining the possibilities for performance, SummerWorks 2018 will offer a program split between three streams – SummerWorks Presentations, SummerWorks Lab, and SummerWorks Exchange. We’ve also introduced some changes to our tickets and passes, and an expanded accessibility program.
Our SummerWorks Presentations series offers you a snapshot of contemporary performance in 2018. These are artists working in theatre, dance, music, live art, and hybrid forms who have been developing their work on stages, in studios, and at other festivals across the country. The Presentations Series is a chance for them to share their finished work with a wider audience and to provide a platform for that work to reach even greater success in the future.
The SummerWorks Lab is a place for exploration, experimentation, and process, allowing us to support new work in development and forge connections between artists and audiences. In the Lab, you’ll experience works at a critical juncture, where you – the audience – play an essential role in the development of the work. This is the place to see artists working at the vanguard, exploring new possibilities in performance and engaging with forward looking ideas; a place to see what the future of live performance will look like.
The SummerWorks Exchange is a new initiative of the Festival, encapsulating our professional development and industry activities. In the SummerWorks Exchange, we have curated a series of events to facilitate artist and community growth, to strengthen the ecology of live performance in Canada, and expand our dialogue and collaboration with the international arts community. Including training and networking opportunities between artists and curators from Canada and beyond, the Exchange is the place where we come together to share and connect, confront the big questions facing our community today, and make plans for the future.
The SummerWorks Exchange has been made possible by the Toronto Arts Council’s Open Door Program, with additional support from the Ontario Arts Council Market Development Initiative.
Our Festival Passes continue to be the best way to experience the Festival, as they give you flexible options for seeing multiple shows for the lowest price. New for 2018, Pass Holders will get early access to book tickets to individual shows before they go on sale to the general public.
This year’s Festival will be the first that 100% of tickets for all performances and events will be available for sale in advance. In the past, a certain amount had been held for sale at the door, but in consultation with our artists and audiences, we have decided to discontinue this practice.
Any tickets not sold in advance will still be available for purchase at the door beginning one hour prior to show time.
