OPEN STUDIOS

12:00pm-4:30pm

Venue: Pia Bouman School

Co-Curated by Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, Dancemakers and SummerWorks

An opportunity to see new works in development. This is a seeding ground for new ideas and new creative relationships – a place for you to discover your new favourite artists. Coffee and lunch are provided.

Lunch co-Hosted by Public Recordings. Public Recordings is an artist-led collective based in Toronto. They develop and present hypotheses about group work using dance, theatre, music, publication and other collective gestures. Building partnerships and strengthening context is vital to their work. Initiatives such as Open Studios are important moments of contact and critical solidarity–exactly what Public Recordings is all about. They’re thrilled to help make this event possible and facilitate new connections.

During the event, six artists have been selected to share short excerpts, including:

Marry Me Marry Me Marry Me Marry Me
House + Body
What happens when a bride-to-be can’t get married until she finds her placenta? House + Body presents playwright Marina Moreira’s surreal exploration of bridal superstitions taken to the extreme.

Random Closeness
Teneile Warren
A ‘woke’ Black love story between Dayna, the fierce feminist biracial Canadian queer and Alek, the lesbian-identified creative writing student from Jamaica. Playwright Teneile Warren uses humour to unpack the often ignored reality of Black queer love between different Black cultures.

Silver Venus
Andrea Spaziani
An ensemble reconstruction of the feminine persona VENUS that combines the activity of silver with aquatic behaviour. In Silver Venus, choreographer Andrea Spaziani offers a procreative anti-altar that transforms water into deeply felt soundwaves and black fabric.

Solo (not solo) Water Study
Meryem Alaoui
A piece for a dancer and percussionist dealing with sound and movement synchronicity. Choreographed by Meryem Alaoui in collaboration with percussionist Robin Buckley and dancer Sahara Morimoto, Solo (not solo) Water Study uses the interplay between musical rhythms and physical movement to negotiate failure, use failure with agency, and move the invisible.

The Communist Manifesto for Children
Bruce Gibbons Fell / So Much Drama
The Communist Manifesto for Children is a play for grownups about class, boredom, and innocence. Four children play games based on Marx and Engels’ manifesto, leading to introspective journeys, hallucinations, fever, and an exorcism.

The Queen in Me
Amplified Opera and Theatre Gargantua
Teiya Kasahara – a biracial, masculine non-binary female artist – explores the constraints of traditional opera roles and explodes traditional expectations by combining Mozart’s Queen of the Night with original text and classical opera into one very theatrical event.

ASL Interpretation will be provided for this event.
