Enter a not-so-imaginary world filled with mysterious characters who are many things and cannot quite be named. They are the omniscient mistress, the head of the brothel, and the lady of the house. They are not entirely human and they have no gender. They are witches and wizards and beasts. They are the wise players in a traveling circus and the illusionists of old cities. They are homeless pickpockets and rich empire-owners. They are fifth business: the character in a story that is neither protagonist, nor antagonist, yet the story could not exist without. They are you and they are me. The rhythm of the music guides them, or maybe even pushes them, ever forward, like a heartbeat and breath takes us through life.
With an original score and live music, “Laughing Merlin & The Romanticals” sets a constant rhythm of moving forward, always traveling through space and time.
Choreography by Robyn Breen; Dance created with and performed by Claudine Dubé, Marie Lambin-Gagnon and Robert Abubo; Music created with and performed by Jeff Giles, Tom Ionescu and Bennett Young; Dramaturgy by Sharon B. Moore; Past collaborators and performers Christian Giraldo, Mathieu Trépanier, and Natalia Lisina.
"I am so curious about these strange and beautiful characters who seem contemporary while also being of the past. Why are they drawn together, stick together, and how are they bound through thick and thin, by bodies, by circumstance, by music and time? They seem to be mood, motif, gesture, struggle, and triumph. Very human, yet beyond human as well." - Jenn Goodwin
