CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
undercurrents: theatre below the mainstream

undercurrents: theatre below the mainstream is the Great Canadian Theatre Company’s festival of independent theatre, taking place in our studio theatre from February 11-23, 2014. Now in its fourth year, undercurrents seeks original, innovative work by Canadian artists.

Showcasing the best independent theatre from Ottawa and across the country, undercurrents will present six shows in 2014, and invites submissions from Ottawa-based and national companies. The festival will consider applications from established and emerging artists who are working in new play creation, as well as from those touring previously produced original work.

We encourage submissions from artists experimenting in form, style, and creation process, as we have a particular interest in expanding the festival’s content by including productions that use experimental forms. We are also seeking submissions from artists interested in creating a live art/installation piece for the theatre’s lobby spaces during the festival.

Participating productions will receive up to five performances in rep, within a shared venue environment (i.e. a shared lighting plot with show-specific specials, shared dressing room space, limited tech time and storage space). Productions should be 50-80 minutes in length, and must be able to set up and strike in less than 30 minutes. Festival participants will be paid a guaranteed presenting fee.

Companies and artists who wish to have their production considered for undercurrents are invited to submit the following materials no later Friday, July 5, 2013 at 5:00 pm.
A proposal describing the project and its history (maximum three pages)
A list of participating artists and biographies/CVs of lead artists
Technical specifications for the production
A script sample or completed script
Additional support material (optional)
An archival or promotional recording of the proposed play (if available)

Applications will be accepted in electronic format only. Applicants are asked to send all written materials (numbers 1-5 above) in a single PDF file, and provide links to video-sharing sites where archival or promotional recordings of the proposed work can viewed.

Questions regarding the festival or the application process can be directed to Patrick Gauthier, Festival Director, at associate@gctc.ca; or by phone: 613.236.5192 x314

More information on GCTC and the undercurrents festival can be found online at: http://www.gctc.ca/whats/undercurrents

SummerWorks Performance Festival Announces 2013 Theatre Lineup
Canada’s Most Influential and Cutting-edge Festival Returns for its 23rd Season

SummerWorks Performance Festival, Canada’s largest juried theatre festival, announces its final selection for the 2013 festival running August 8th- 18th. This year’s festival will feature over 35 theatre productions and the return of the popular Music Series, Live Art Series and Performance Bar.

“This year’s SummerWorks is remarkably diverse, abundant in work pulsating with curiosity, innovation and urgency. It is a year of returns and introductions. There are many veteran SummerWorks and former Toronto artists returning to the Festival as well as many new voices. And lastly, we’re introducing a series of international playwrights receiving new Canadian productions, and a new work by an internationally acclaimed artist. It’s a fantastically ambitious year, living up to the kind of artistic quality and meaningful investigation you have come to expect from our Festival.” Michael Rubenfeld, Artistic Producer

Featuring plays written by Adam Lazarus, Guillermo Verdecchia, Kevin Rees, Sky Gilbert, Jordan Tannahill, Cliff Cardinal, d’bi.young, Heidi Strauss, Greg MacArthur, Aurora Stewart de Peña and productions directed by Kelli Fox and David Ferry among others. SummerWorks also welcomes a piece produced by Mitchell Cushman who directed last year’s hit show Terminus.

The 2013 SummerWorks National Series will feature five productions including How to Disappear Completely, making its SummerWorks debut after a successful run at Factory, and a piece by veteran artist Nadia Ross, entitled 7 Important Things. For the first time SummerWorks welcomes a full length piece, as part of the International Series, from Berlin titled Schützen by Cecilie Ullerup Schmidt and Matthias Meppelink.

As part of the Youth Programming Series SummerWorks welcomes two productions from the Sears Ontario Drama Festival as well as a piece from The Amy Project (Artists Mentoring Youth).

Call for Participation:

Toronto Public Library, the Neighbourhood Arts Network and Ontario Culture Days are pleased to continue Culture Days @ The Library for a third year. This exciting partnership was created to help artists and arts groups share their creative work with the public. In the first 2 years of the program more than 4,000 Torontonians have enjoyed the work of 100 artists and cultural groups in 66 library branches across the city. Now in its fourth year, Culture Days is a pan-Canadian celebration of arts and culture. For more information, visit www.culturedays.ca.

Toronto Public Library is offering free venues to Toronto-based artists and cultural groups wishing to be part of Culture Days on September 27-28, 2013. This partnership enables artists to take their practice out of their private studios into the accessible spaces of library branches so that the public can discover and engage with their work. Past participants describe Culture Days @ the Library as a great opportunity to connect with new audiences and to build strong community relationships. From Etobicoke to Scarborough, North York and downtown Toronto, some 40 TPL branches spanning the city will provide venues at no cost.

Toronto-based individual artists, small and medium-sized professional arts groups as well as volunteer-run cultural organizations, collectives or groups that wish to organize their events at a Toronto Public Library branch are invited to submit an application by April 15, 2013. Activities in all artistic disciplines are encouraged as well as those that appeal to families and audiences of diverse ages. To be considered for a space, the arts activity must be free and interactive.
Toronto Public Library staff will review the applications, make their selections and contact activity organizers directly for any additional information they may require and to make arrangements. Library branches are providing free space but cannot provide any financial assistance, including funds for supplies or equipment. Participants do receive administrative, marketing and promotional support for their activity via the joint efforts of Culture Days, Toronto Public Library and Neighbourhood Arts Network.

40 Toronto Public Library Branches Open their Doors

“The Culture Days @ the Library program was a wonderful opportunity to work with the public and a fantastic chance to meet so many creative members of the library community. I especially appreciated the positive support from library staff and their enthusiastic response to the program I created.” – Jennifer Falvy, Independent artist, 2012 Culture Days @ the Library participant

The following branches have committed to hosting Culture Days activities. The majority of activities will be scheduled on Saturday, September 28, with a limited number scheduled on Friday, September 27. For location and details about each branch, go to http://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/hours-locations/index.jsp

SummerWorks is now accepting submissions for our LIVE ART series.

Established in 2012, the Live Art Series runs concurrently with the Festival main and offers a platform for experimental and experiential approaches to performance.

Live Art seeks to create work that is experiential, work that exists solely in the space and time-frame of the performance in interaction with the performer and audience.

According to Live Artist, Joshua Sofaer, “… at its most fundamental, Live Art is when an artist chooses to make work directly in front of the audience in space and time. …Live Art comes into being at the actual moment of encounter between artist and spectator. Or at least even if they are not physically present, the artist sets up a situation in which the audience experience the work in a particular space and time, and the notion of ‘presence’ is key to the concerns of the work.”

With all this in mind, we are looking for artists working in, or experimenting with notions of Live Art. Submissions are encouraged from artists working in all artistic genres, with the only specification being that the work must encapsulate a form of live performance in an untraditional space and it must consider the presence of the audience in relationship to the work. The space must be within the parameters of the Festival, which is situated on Queen Street between Spadina and Noble.

Artists are asked to submit a project proposal that is no more than 3 pages. Works that you may have presented elsewhere are welcomed, though we are especially interested in artists building a project specifically for the Festival.

We are interested in understanding the intent of your work, and how you see the audience contextualized in the piece. Please include ideas for space and length. Work can be made for as few as one audience member at a time to as many as infinity. We ask that the work be something that can be presented a minimum of 3 – 4 times during the Festival, unless your work is durational. In this case, the performance can happen only once.

We welcome samples of the work or your past work. Anything you can give us to help us envision the work, or your history as an artist, is encouraged (DVDs, text, photographs, reviews, letter of reference, etc).

SummerWorks will offer you a fee for your work. This fee will be negotiated between the Festival and the artist, and will depend upon the scope of the work, and whether the work is something for which the Festival can charge an entry fee. Work that cannot be ticketed is encouraged. The Festival will also help you secure space and context if desired, as well as a Live Art Producer; a SummerWorks staff member dedicated to working to help produce the Live Art Series.

Please mail in a hard copy to
Tina Fance, Live Art Producer
423-401 Richmond Street West, Toronto, ON
M5V 3A8

PLEASE ALSO FILL OUT YOUR APPLICATION ON LINE – BY CLICKING HERE
Simply print out a version of this to use with your hard copy application.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to email our Live Art Producer, Tina Fance, at tina@summerworks.ca

Deadline to Submit: April 15th
Decision will be made by May 15th.
Festival Dates: August 8-18th.
Submission fee: $10. (either online or cash/cheque – made payable to SummerWorks Theatre Festival)
