POST: S.L.I.P. 2012 – A RETROFLECTION

“Everything is a choice.”   The alarm rings. A piercing shriek. Stiff and bleary-eyed, I struggle to regain the silence of slumber-filled soundscapes, but when I see my phone… That can’t be the time! In a flash, I throw off the blankets, leaping into a pair of jeans and tripping down the hallway to collect my bag and notebook along with whatever tickets – The tickets! Where are the tickets? I need my… And that’s when I realize. I don’t have any tickets. I won’t get to enjoy a brisk... Read The Rest →

SAYING SEE YOU SOON: SLIP DAY 12

Who would have thought that twelve days with twelve strangers (fifteen if you include our fantastic facilitators and organizer) could fly by so fast. Suddenly the end of our intensive week and a half together has reached its final few hours and I am feeling sentimental to say the least. The day began with my cohost Wesley, and myself leading the group through an eclectic final warmup. We ended by going back to one of the activities that we did together on the first day: counting to 21 as a... Read The Rest →

S.L.I.P. Day XI: Dancing On My Own

Hey guys, hi. Saturday was my day to put the L in S.L.I.P—something I’ve been excited and vaguely nervous about for the past, like, three years (not really, not nervous, I’m cool totally cool always cool).  With Tatiana’s help, the jam-packed day went off with aplomb, which is something I dig: aplomb.   The following is some kind of distillation of our penultimate day; the myriad voices and sartorial choices that swept into our sultry (as in hot/moist sultry) chamber of Real Talk at the top of the Factory Theatre.... SLIP Day 10: What is the Value of Theatre to Society?

This post originally appeared at www.LoisBackstage.com. I have a minor fear of acting warm ups. Okay, that isn’t totally fair: I’m scared of pushing myself beyond my comfort zone and take risks and for me, acting warm ups fall into that “outside the realm of my experience” zone. In an effort to make this experience painless as possible I decided to take the morning warm up in a totally different direction. I swung by Loblaws and picked up two packages of toothpicks and a container of Swedish Berries (you know,... Read The Rest →

Home Stretch

What a day! Today was day 9 of the S.L.I.P program. The last 9 days have blurred together for me. I’ve probably seen over twenty different shows at this point. I feel that at this point we’ve passed the point of exhaustion, bid farewell to society, abandoned the concept of free time, and felt nostalgic about proper meals of yesteryears. We have become a crack team of non stop go getters, watch out. On a personal note – I don’t think I ever knew what humidity or the term “muggy”... Read The Rest →

SLIP ‘n SLIDE: The Roller Coaster Ride that is SLIP

Hey all! So. Day 8. Yes Day 8. Honestly, I think that this day was kind of a turning point. For me at least. I cannot speak for my fellow SLIPers, but to go with the roller coaster imagery that I used above, today was a tipping point. (In a good way, and I will explain). We started the day off talking about disengagement vs. engagement when watching theatre. We are seeing a large amount of theatre, and it is easy, I think, to take that for granted. But what... S.L.I.P. – DAY 7 (PART 2) BY CHRISTOPHER DOUGLAS

So to pick up where Justin left off… (And thanks to him for leading the first part of the day, because I was dreading having to lead the warmup!) After lunch, we were joined by Leslie Lester who has worked extensively with VideoCabaret, Nightwood and Soulpepper.  She spoke with us about Corporate Relationships, which was a weird hybrid of some of the workshops we have had (Professional Etiquette, Fundraising) and will have (Marketing).  One of the key points we spoke about – that resonated with myself and others – was... S.L.I.P. – DAY 7 BY JUSTIN MADOL

Yeeeaaaah day seven! We’ve only been here for a week and already I feel like I’ve absorbed a jumbo-jet worth of incredible information. It’s been inspiring, challenging, frustrating and then inspiring again and my sentiment is: keep it coming! We started the day with our ritual warm up (led by myself) which included plenty of stretching, rattling, breathing and a little round of a Stan Rogers song for good measure (though I may have lost some SLIPees on that one We did our check-in and discussion and spoke to the... S.L.I.P. – DAY SIX BY POORIA FARD

The day started with a simple check in by Andrew (Kushnir), where a value line was created to gauge how exhausted the group is; And, we mostly felt pretty good and ready to tackle the day (especially after 10 and half hours of sleep in one case).  From there we went into a simple physical warm up. True to S.L.I.P. tradition, we wrote a personal mandate, but Andrew threw us a twist: The mandate had to be five words or less and, unlike previous days, today’s mandate was for us... S.L.I.P. – DAY FIVE BY TINA FANCE

Today, Day 5 of SLIP, was fairly easy going in relation to some of our previous full days although it didn’t start that way. This morning I led the group in a rambunctious round of the Hokey Pokey: The British Version (if you need clarification just ask and I will gladly demonstrate the extra flourish) which left the group a little breathless in our tropical retreat (read: the factory rehearsal hall). After catching our breath and getting our little air conditioner to work his best magic (god bless him) we... Read The Rest →
